What the commission actually approved.
Your Consumers Energy natural gas bill is rising about 3.92 dollars a month starting November 1, 2026. This is separate from the company's pending electric rate case and from a new gas rate case Consumers has said it plans to file by mid-December 2026.
Your Dominion Virginia bill is rising about 10.23 dollars a month to cover fuel costs the company already spent, split between a fuel factor charge and a bond repayment charge; spreading it out with bonds kept the increase smaller than a one-time catch-up would have been.

A rate case is the public proceeding where a utility asks the state commission for permission to charge more. It is public record, it has a docket number, a hearing, a comment period and a decision, and it is almost never written for the people who pay for it. We read the filings and say what they mean: the ask, what was actually approved (usually much less), the dollars on a typical bill, and the dates that matter.
Dollar figures come from the utility's own published estimate when it exists. When only a percentage is published, we apply it to the average residential bill in your state from the US Energy Information Administration and say so. The methodology page shows the arithmetic.
